Many sports fans around the world choose to frame bespoke jerseys to celebrate an amazing season or a standout performance from their favourite player. These frames make an awesome decoration for any home and they help you to show your passion.
We recently framed a signed Jokić jersey for a customer and it was great fun. Jokić is an outstanding Serbian basketball player who currently plays for the Denver Nuggets.
While we were putting together the special shadowbox frame, we thought it would be fun to share some tips with you! Here’s a closer look at some of the top tips to follow when it comes to framing your sports jerseys.
Tips for Putting Your Sports Jersey in a Bespoke Frame
To get the most from your frame and your prized jersey, you’ll want to make sure you follow these tips.
1. Make Sure the Jersey Is Clean
First and foremost, you should make sure that the jersey is as clean as possible. If the jersey is new, that’s perfect! If the jersey has been played in, though, you should make sure to clean it to get rid of any bacteria that could speed up the fading process.
You should wash it gently following all of the directions that have been outlined by the manufacturer. If you have been lucky enough to get your jersey signed, you’ll want to make sure that you take all the necessary precautions to protect that ink.
With a nice clean jersey, you’ll be ready to start thinking about the frame itself and how you’re going to get the most from it.
2. Choose the Right Shadowbox Frame
Shadowbox frames are essentially frames that have additional depth. This means that physical objects can easily be placed within them and that you can achieve some really amazing effects.
It’s not as simple as picking a shadowbox frame from a shelf, though; you’ll want to think about a range of factors. Here’s a look at just some of the key things we thought about when putting together the shadowbox frame for the Jokić jersey.
You’re going to want to measure the frame as accurately as possible to make sure that it’s big enough for your needs. Jokić is 7 feet tall, so his jersey was very large! You should measure the jersey itself and think about how much of a distance you’ll want to keep between the jersey and the frame itself.
Of course, you should also think about any additional objects that are going to be included in the frame, such as sponsor logos or inscriptions.
You’ll also want to choose an acrylic cover that helps you to protect your jersey from harmful UV rays that will lead to discolouration over time. There’s also a few added benefits to choosing an acrylic cover.
Acrylic is much better because it is lighter than glass and it’s also much safer given that it cannot shatter in the same way. This option is also less reflective than glass, meaning that you can enjoy your jersey even if it is placed in direct sunlight.
Of course, you’ll also want to find a shadowbox frame that nicely complements the colour of your jersey. In our option, for example, the customer decided to go for a modern black frame that would complement the darker colour of the Nuggets jersey.
You can experiment here and feel free to make any adjustments necessary according to the colour of your jersey. It’s fun to also think about where your frame is going to be hung and how it can fit with its environment.
You’ll also want to pay careful attention to the colour of the backing paper and how this can either complement or contrast the colour of the jersey. Given that the jersey for our customer was so dark, we went for a nice bright colour for the backing.
Again, this is something that can be changed according to the colour of your jersey and your needs.
3. Use Foam to Fill Out the Jersey
When it comes to putting the jersey in the bespoke shadowbox frame, you’ll want to make sure that it looks great and filled out – there’s nothing worse than a limp jersey that hangs in a frame. To achieve this, you could decide to cut out a piece of foam to put inside the shirt.
Once you have done this, you will find that the shirt looks as though it has been filled out and it looks far more natural within your frame. This takes some skill, though, and you should try hard to make sure that the foam has a natural form.
4. Attach the Jersey
Once the jersey is ready to attach, you’ll have to figure out exactly how you want the jersey to be hung within the frame. There are a few options available to you here and the best one will depend on your preferences.
Many people decide to stitch the back of the jersey to the board. If you go for this option, it’s important that you stitch the jersey in such a way that it hangs naturally. You could also choose to go with magnets as a less destructive option, but you may find that this is not as strong.
5. Incorporate Additional Items
You should also think about how you want to incorporate additional items into the bespoke frame. Our customer decided to incorporate a few different badges into the frame and also include a nice inscription that includes some details about the shirt and Jokić himself.
You could think about doing the same – many people also choose to include a photo of the jersey in action during a game, or a separate signature if that has been collected apart from the jersey itself. There is no limit to the options available to you!
